Report: Global Warming Big Issue in N.Y.

AP reports:
Gov.-elect Eliot Spitzer has already called global warming the most important environmental issue facing this generation, noting as attorney general he's party to the lawsuit now before the U.S. Supreme Court trying to require federal regulators to treat carbon dioxide as a pollutant.

"I support state regulations that would regulate carbon dioxide as a pollutant," he said in written comments Oct. 27 to the Residents Committee to Protect the Adirondacks.

Of course, Spitzer's ability to limit emissions would be non-existent if the Supreme Court Sides with the Automobile industry in this week's case.

Bloods and Crips Vow Revenge

A rare pact between the Bloods and Crips has been formed to retaliate against the NYPD for last weeks shooting, reports the NY Daily News.

Report: New York Should Act on Global Warming now

“Environmental Advocates of New York favors strong government action to cut greenhouse gas pollution from all sectors of the economy in a way that fairly and equitably distributes the responsibility for addressing this problem,” the report reads. “In the absence of such action by our federal government, however, New York can and should take the opportunity to lead the way for our nation as a whole, finding ways to diminish our contribution to this global problem. By doing so now, New York will be able to steer the national debate and determine for itself the best way to address the issue of climate change.”
-Are you listening Mr. Spitzer? We need serious action now.

Activist's Fiery Death Prompts Questions

"Here is the statement I want to make: if I am required to pay for your barbaric war, I choose not to live in your world. I refuse to finance the mass murder of innocent civilians, who did nothing to threaten our country," he wrote in his suicide note. "... If one death can atone for anything, in any small way, to say to the world: I apologize for what we have done to you, I am ashamed for the mayhem and turmoil caused by my country."

There was only one problem: No one was listening.

Court Case Could Shape U.S. Global Warming Policy

"Among all states, Texas is by far the No. 1 emitter of greenhouse gas pollution. But Texas has no plan to stop it, slow it down or deal with the consequences. We don't even have an official state inventory of what's at risk. Other states are trying to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, but Texas is poised to build 19 coal-fired power plants that will emit an additional 110 million tons of greenhouse gas pollution a year. That's a pretty good snapshot of the path our leaders have taken us down."

Direct-Action Protests

As reported before on the Long and Continuous Emergency, the protests to stop the killing of the Earth are beginning. These protests will echo the direct-actions during the Sixites until the governments of the world start acting in the interest of human beings (and non-humans) instead of the corporations.

"We want to show that the only way we're going to cut carbon emissions by 90 percent is if we shut these plants down ourselves," Zee says.

Hypocrisy

John McCain said American troops in Iraq were “fighting and dying for a failed policy."

THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRATS HAVE BEEN SAYING ALL ALONG. And they were criticized for being unpatriotic...what gives?
Is John McCain unpatriotic now?

one bad election failure

"It is now clear that Dean's strategy was the correct one and that of Emanuel and his fellow Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) anti-Dean partisans (James Carville, Simon Rosenberg, Joe Lieberman, Al From, etc.) was off-base and cost the Democrats an even wider margin of victory in the House and possibly the Senate as well.

For example, take the Florida 15th Congressional District in which retired Air Force Lt. Col. Bob Bowman ran against entrenched Republican Dave Weldon. Bowman, who won an impressive 44 percent in a strong Republican district, did not receive one cent from the DCCC or the Florida Democratic Party. Weldon raised $727,000 in his campaign while Bowman had a scant $91,279. Another candidate who was ignored by Emanuel was Florida 24th District candidate Clint Curtis, the former programmer who was asked by his opponent Tom Feeney to write a program to flip votes on voting machines in Florida. Curtis beat the favored Democratic candidate -- Andy Michaud -- in the primary. His punishment by the Emanuel clique was no money. Feeney had $1,295,000 in his war chest while Curtis had a mere $44,356. Yet Curtis almost fared as well as Bowman in the strongly Republican district -- he won an impressive 42 percent -- with not one dime from Emanuel's coffers."

Eliot Spitzer Wins One For The Environment On The Way To His New Job

Monday, November 13th, 2006. The U.S. Department of Energy will set new standards to increase energy efficiency in 22 household appliances under an agreement announced Monday by New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer. Fifteen states and New York City in September 2005 sued the Energy Department for failing to enact stronger energy standards required by Congress. The suit led by Spitzer claimed the federal agency has failed to set tougher requirements for manufacturers that would save electricity, natural gas and oil.

Countries that refuse to join international efforts to cut greenhouse emissions – such as the US and China – should face a European carbon tax on their imports, Dominique de Villepin, the French prime minister, proposed on Monday. - Financial Times

If Anyone Tries to Tell You that Things are Getting Better...

...DONT LISTEN. In fact, that is a dangerous position.

BBC - Greenhouse gases hit record high.

The steady rise in atmospheric levels of the greenhouse gases blamed for climate change shows no signs of abating, a UN agency has announced.

"There is no sign that N2O (nitrous oxide) and CO2 are starting to level off," Geir Braathen, a senior scientist at the WMO, told reporters.

"Every human being on this globe should think about how much CO2 he or she emits and try to do something about that."

The Solution.

You can't bargain with the planet because it doesn't care whether or not targets are "politically acceptable". So unless we secure a deal determining how much carbon each nation and each person can emit, we simply will not survive. - The New Statesman
